Along the Commute, Transit Wraps Are Wrapping Up Attention
August 10th, 2026
Imagine for a moment that you’re on social media and you scroll across an ad for Dunkin’. Sure, it might catch your attention for a moment before you scroll on.
Now imagine your reaction as the MTBA’s Dunkin’-wrapped ferry picks you up – a much different impression. Whether you’re getting off at Seaport, Central Wharf, or Logan Airport, you are likely to look for the nearest Dunkin’.

Transit wraps efficiently engage a mass crowd of consumers as the vehicles move around town. They’re a prime example of how impactful IRL media truly is. These wraps – also available on select buses, subways, and commuter rail – are a platform for strategic storytelling leaves riders with a positive reflection on the morning mundanity. The impact of a transit wrap is simply unachievable with a mobile ad.

With oversaturation of digital advertising, people are looking for things to wow them again. That’s where IRL media shines. On average, an IRL ad gets 12 seconds of eyes-on attention, more than nearly every other ad format (SOURCE: QMS/Amplified Intelligence).

Wrapped IRL media can take many different forms, like this decked-out bus shelter in West Hollywood. Peacock’s Love Island campaign was designed to awaken the excitement of the summer. The wrapped shelter acted as a bridge between Love Island’s tropical environment and the places where Angelenos live their real lives. With capabilities like props, sound, and lighting effects, shelters immerse you in a whole new world before your ride arrives. It’s not just transit infrastructure anymore. It’s an attraction that elevates the environment around it.

Besides the MBTA Ferry, OUTFRONT offers three different types of transit vehicle wraps: Rail, Bus, and Trolley. All three can carry the same message, but the big difference is whom they deliver that message to.
- Bus wraps target city residents and pedestrians, capturing urban dwellers’ attention as they carry a brand’s messaging throughout the bus’s entire route. Even when regular-sized, bus advertising matters: 80% of those who notice bus ads look for them most or all the time (SOURCE: Nielsen). Bus wraps are available in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Miami, Boston, San Francisco, San Jose, and Las Vegas.
- Rail Wraps target urban professionals during rush hours. Wrapped rail cars subvert the expected during the monotonous workday commute, while surprising and delighting those who see the wrapped train pass. Advertisers who wrap the NYC Subway Shuttle often fully deck out its interiors as well, immersing consumers in their brand. Rail Wraps are located in New York City, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Miami, Boston, San Jose, and San Francisco.
- Trolley Wraps are available exclusively in Miami. They reach tourists and shoppers as they move through densely populated, highly affluent areas.

Here’s why wrapped media stands out. The routine nature of riding transit compels commuters to shut off their brain in a way, so when that tedium is broken by something original like a striking wrap, that novelty brings a genuine shift to the riders’ attention. Advertisers can enjoy creative liberty and use their freedom to deliver their own unique messaging and connect with an audience.
One campaign in New York City during the World Cup perfectly demonstrates how IRL media can connect with a cultural wave, not only to unify its audience but to create new fans as well.

Along with the FIFA World Cup 2026 NYNJ Host Committee and New York City Hall, the MTA wrapped subway cars in visually striking graphics that represent the 48 participating countries, presenting each country's flag in unique, artful styles that evoke thrill for the event across all five boroughs.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani appreciated how this IRL experience connected New Yorkers and visitors across a diverse cultural mosaic. “This city was built by people from every corner of the globe,” said Mamdani, “and for the next few weeks, every corner of the globe is coming to us. Get on the train t experience the most beautiful city in the world during the beautiful game.” The integration into the subway system makes a big moment even bigger, as the Subway is an already intrinsic component of New York City life.
The MTA even figured out a way to turn these trains into destination media, so fans could find their team’s train. They implemented tracking on the MTA app in the form of a soccer ball icon. By clicking the icon and checking the train line, riders could find the exact time the themed trains will arrive at their desired station. This integration was a revolutionary example of how mobile can be incorporated to extend transit media engagement.

Wrapped media builds on human curiosity and the beauty of a connective shared experience. When one passes you it feels like you’re at the focal point of an something worth exploring more. They give you the front row seat of the brand’s personality while creating intrigue.
