October 8, 2026
The anticipation is building. There’s a lot to discover. You just landed at San Diego International Airport.
You’re eager to feel the sunshine beaming on your face, to smell the salt air from the Pacific Ocean, to hear a concert playing in the distance. You can almost taste those delicious tacos.

San Diego and its 3.3 million residents welcome 32 million visitors a year. OUTFRONT’s IRL media coverage across the region reaches them at scale while the visitors spend $22 billion and the city’s overall GDP cracks the nation’s top ten (SOURCE: San Diego Tourism Authority, FOX 5 San Diego). Here’s how our canvases reach and influence audiences throughout San Diego.
The San Diego You’ve Read About
Heading north on the I-5 Freeway, you notice billboards leading into Old Town. The billboards remind you of the good things you’ve heard about the area and you decide to stop. You see fresh tortillas being made in the front of a restaurant called Café Coyote. On your after-dinner walk, you notice all the calaveras vibrantly displayed around Old Town and feel growing excitement for Halloween and Dia de los Muertos.
You take a detour via the I-8 West, where oversized 14’x48’ billboards greet visitors headed to SeaWorld. But you’re headed elsewhere. West Mission Bay Drive takes you through to Mission Beach and the iconic postcard moment you were waiting for! You see the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster at Belmont Park. The sunset washes over the poster billboard stacked on top of Mr. Ruriberto’s Mexican Food.

You continue north to Pacific Beach to experience one of San Diego’s nightlife districts, Garnet Avenue. Bars and restaurants such as PB Shore Club, Mavericks Beach Club, and The Grass Skirt invite excitement with music playing for bargoers walking the streets. Then you see it! One of our illuminated billboards above the cars passing by and people walking by.

The San Diego Locals Know

The following morning, you continue north on the I-5. You stop at Westfield UTC for a morning coffee and to see what all the buzz is about. As you become one of its 13.6M annual visitors, you have a morning coffee, shop, and entertain yourself walk throughout the mall (SOURCE: Placer.ai). There, you notice our Digital Kiosks that not only showcase stills, but also full-motion video! Its 22 faces (on both sides of 11 structures) lead you through your shopping experience, one advertisement at a time, as you explore the mall.
You continue past billboards that showcase Torrey Pines Golf Tournament, the horse races at Del Mar Fairgrounds, LEGOLAND California Resort within Carlsbad, and wine advertisements in Fallbrook. You’ve made it to the tip of North County!
Now it’s time to go explore. The North County Mall Digital Billboards capture your attention with their bold colors and tall structure that tower over the I-15. Miramar is known for its military influence and craft beer. The Convoy District, for its Asian restaurants and specialty markets! It’s a good place to get hungry. After you eat, you wind up finding a hidden speakeasy and singing your heart out at a karaoke bar.

Then you continue south to Fashion Valley Mall, home to 192 high-end stores (SOURCE: Simon Property Group) and ten larger-than-life wallscapes that cover sides of buildings and parking garages with advertisements for makeup companies, jewelry, events, and more!
Experiencing San Diego, In Real Life
You continue exploring San Diego's urban core, from the waterfront energy of Downtown and the historic streets of the Gaslamp Quarter to the vibrant neighborhoods of Little Italy, East Village, Hillcrest, and Bankers Hill. Along the way, you discover each district’s own distinct personality and local flavor. Downtown serves as the city's hub for business, conventions, and waterfront attractions. The billboard above Double Deuce catches your eye with bright creative that adds to the energy and excitement of Downtown after dark. The nearby Gaslamp Quarter also comes alive with lively restaurants, nightlife, and historic Victorian architecture.
In Little Italy, you'll find some of Southern California's most celebrated dining experiences alongside bustling plazas and year-round events. East Village blends the excitement of Petco Park, arts venues, and a growing urban lifestyle scene. Hillcrest welcomes visitors with eclectic restaurants, boutique shopping, and a strong sense of community, while neighboring Bankers Hill offers picturesque views and easy access to the museums, gardens, and cultural treasures of Balboa Park. Together, these walkable neighborhoods showcase the diverse experiences, culture, and energy that define San Diego's urban lifestyle.

Balboa Park is one of San Diego's most beloved destinations. The pathways seem endless as you wander past museums, gardens, theaters, and cultural attractions. You visit the world-famous San Diego Zoo, stop to admire the Japanese Friendship Garden, and find yourself constantly discovering something new around every corner. Before you know it, hours have passed and you still haven't seen everything.
IRL Media Influences San Diego Dining & Doing
Exploring San Diego’s neighborhoods can work you up quite an appetite. Luckily, San Diego has become one of Southern California's most celebrated culinary destinations, thanks to local favorites like Callie, Animae, Juniper & Ivy, Born & Raised, and George's at the Cove.
As you explore, you notice how many major events and entertainment venues call San Diego home. One evening you hear music floating from The Rady Shell along the waterfront. Another day Petco Park is buzzing with baseball fans. Everywhere you go, venues like Snapdragon Stadium, the San Diego Convention Center, Pechanga Arena, Del Mar Fairgrounds, and North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre are bringing people together in real life for concerts, sporting events, conventions, festivals, and unforgettable experiences.
Perhaps our best-known event is San Diego Comic-Con, at the San Diego Convention Center. Its three garage walls are canvases that create larger-than-life brand experiences for the thousands of fans attending the convention. Crowds, costumes, and excitement fill the streets during one of San Diego's most iconic events. And throughout the year, events like CRSSD Festival, San Diego Pride, Fleet Week, Balboa Park December Nights, and the Holiday Bowl Parade bring visitors from near and far.

Reach The Real San Diego
Toward the California-Mexico Border, you experience another side of San Diego County, one shaped by the international commerce and cultural influence of cross-border travel. You spend the afternoon shopping at Las Americas Premium Outlets, where five digital billboards showcasing creative from a variety of brands become part of the shopping experience. Before leaving, you stop at Tacos El Gordo. The line is long, but you quickly come to understand why. Nearby, a steady flow of people crosses between the United States and Mexico, a daily reminder that this region serves as a gateway between two countries and cultures.

Yet another side of San Diego is East County, where ocean views gradually give way to rolling hills and open landscapes as you pass through El Cajon and Alpine. The pace feels different here. Local businesses line the streets, outdoor recreation is never far away, and community events bring neighbors together.
Looking Back at San Diego
As your plane lifts off, you take a moment to reflect on everything you've experienced over the past week. You wandered through the historic streets and watched the sun set. You tasted fresh tortillas, incredible tacos, and unforgettable meals. You smelled the salt air along the Pacific Ocean and felt the warmth of the sunshine.
Along the way, you also discovered how IRL media is woven into the places people live, shop, dine, commute, and celebrate. From iconic billboards along the coast and digital displays at premier shopping destinations to oversized wallscapes that transform the city during major events, each format became part of the experience itself, connecting brands with audiences in meaningful moments. Over the course of one unforgettable week, you've experienced the sights, sounds, flavors, and energy that make San Diego County unlike anywhere else, and you've only scratched the surface. As the city slowly fades into the distance, you're already thinking about your next visit, knowing there's still more left to discover.
